Dentist Brain Candy

The podcast is designed for the dentist who likes to learn and improve their practice. The information and content delivered is designed to help the restorative dentist move their practice forward. Each week we start off with an quote that gets the metal gears turning, a book review which will be digested for the listener over a series of episodes pulling out relevant material and applying it to the dental practice. Next an article will be reviewed from the literature and available for download. The show will close with an interesting case that I have come across. Pictures and radiographs, when appropriate will be on the website to review as well. The benefits include having a virtual dental buddy that you can listen to and “hang out with” and talk shop and grow your experience, knowledge and enthusiasm for our profession.

I conclude part 3 of the FIVE LOVE LANGUAGES by Gary Chapman and you really do want to become a master of this topic and material.  I go into a clever tool called an SRT which is used to retrieve a stripped screw head in an abutment.  Photos of the tool and a screw I removed are in the interesting cases section as well.  The article review discusses custom molar healing abutments in order to obtain ideal soft tissue contours in the final restoration of molar implants.

I start off this week with some more Irish Proverbs and move quickly into a very well done anatomical study on the variations of the course of the Mandibular Nerve or IAN.  There are many variations and each has a clinical implication specifically on achieving adequate local anesthetic.  If you have EVER had a problem with getting a patient numb and not know why this episode if for you.  I discuss my tricks for getting ideal anesthesia.

The interesting case has some fantastic photos of a fractured supraorbital rim and anterior table of the frontal sinus that required open reduction and the placement of plates and screws.  I know you will enjoy this episode.

Today I start off with a couple of Irish sayings with my best Irish accent.  You will notice I did not say it was a good Irish accent, just my best.  From there I start part 1 of the Five Love Languages.  Mastering the content in this book will surely help you in every area of life and especially in the most important area : spouse and family.  This is a book every newly engaged couple should read and then every married couple should re read every 3 years.  I then review a study comparing topical refrigerant vs the traditional 20% topical benzocaine for palatal injections done by a friend of mine Dr Dimarco.  The interesting case goes over a large gingival mass in 27/28 area that was biopsied and excised and can be see in the interesting case section.  Enjoy this week's episode!

In this episode I discuss the appropriate timing of a wisdom tooth consult and timing of extractions when they are necessary.  I discuss anatomical guidelines and parameters and then go into depth on what my third molar consult is like including a description of the logistics from beginning to end with each team members role.
